Help with family planning issues

Today there are so many options when it comes to birth control and family planning. Your smartest, safest course of action is to discuss these options with Dr. Gatlin before proceeding on your own. Although there are many options, they can basically be divided into two broad categories.

Hormonal options

  • The Pill – Daily oral contraceptive (birth control pill) or extended regimen oral contraceptive.
  • The Patch – Apply to skin and change weekly.
  • Vaginal Ring – This is inserted monthly and left in place for 21 days.
  • Injection – Injectable hormonal contraceptive every three months.
  • Intrauterine Contraceptive – Also called IUD, this is placed in the uterus for up to seven years.

Non-hormonal options

  • Spermicide – Used each time before sex.
  • Diaphragm – Inserted before sex and removed 6 hours later.
  • Contraceptive Sponge – Inserted before sex and removed 6 hours after sex.
  • Cervical Cap – Inserted before sex and removed 6 hours later.
  • Female Condom – Used each time before sex.
  • Male Condom – Used each time before sex.
  • Nonhormonal Intrauterine Contraceptive – Also called IUD, this is placed in the uterus for up to 10 years.
  • Sterilization – Tubal ligation for women, vasectomy for men.
